Year 3 achieved a lot of learning in the woods today. We had negotiation, creation, laughter, challenges, successes and a few tears. Everyone had a great time.

10 new businesses from year 6 pitched their ideas to 3 Dragons this afternoon. They are all hoping to gain the Much coveted stalls at the forthcoming Christmas Bazaar to raise money. Watch this space to find who was successful. In the meantime have a look at the pictures below. Well done Year 6 - brave and bold....
How deep is the pond - in metres, cm, mm or even Km? Year 6 practised their power of measuring and conversion between units today as part of #outdoorlearningday.
Rabbit returned to the woods today, and set to work helping cut wood for the log shed. The children also worked hard, either cutting, or splitting wood, or completing the digging of the trench for the willow. Others created a beautiful piece of rainbow art using leaves they found around the woods. The children enjoyed tree climbing and generating their own games. Holly group enjoyed a Silent Spot and considered what they had learned. Chestnut group ended the afternoon by considering things for which they were grateful; they came up with some very moving thoughts.
After half-term, the groups swap round and Holly Group requested that we cook chestnuts over the fire and play conkers, while Chestnut Group wish to do firestriking.
Sadly this was Mouse’s last session with us until the summer. We have really appreciated her giving up her valuable time to volunteer with us in the woods again. We will miss her calm, quiet cheerfulness, sense of humour and wonderful ideas.

Year 6 got stuck in with all sorts of tasks today: continuing to dig the trench for the willow, which we hope will be in a growing vigorously by the time they return to the woods in June, washing some Lime bark and hanging it out to dry, ready for making cord, making cooking sticks, and making and cooking damper bread and eating it with frankfurters or honey.
There were mixed feelings as we returned to school: disappointment that this was the final session of the term, but excitement that there is something to look forward to later in the school year before they move onto secondary school.
Today year 3 have been beginning to understand column subtraction by looking at numbers represented with solid equipment, like place value counters or base ten. This is to help us to understand that 'taking away' literally means removing some of the total to find your answer. We used our equipment first, then discovered how to write out what we had done using column method subtraction.

A wonderful day in the woods today – the sun shone, the birds sang and everyone settled quickly to their tasks following our usual reminder about hazards and how we keep ourselves safe. Tawny Owl requested that the children do not go to the stream at the moment as there is still a lot of timber lying around following the felling of the unsafe trees. We will hold a working party day very soon, so hopefully a team of adults will help to stack up this wood to create small creature habitats.
The children enjoyed working on the trench we have begun so we can plant a willow screen around the tree bog, others were very helpful to Wren who continued to work on the new Tippy Tap structures.
The camp in the Guelder Rose which was started while we were at ‘Plan B’ was added to and enjoyed by several groups of children who enjoyed learning away from the main area. Some children began making new structures using some of the brash from the tree felling.
All the children and some of the adults became very good at making leaf skeletons from fallen sweet chestnut leaves. The children also loved making paths through the dry, crunchy leaves and piling them up to make soft beds to jump and lie on.
Today was a busy day and everyone played hard, developing their gross motor skills, building their strength, developing patience and persistence, working on their speaking and listening while really enjoying their outdoor learning.
Year four had slightly shortened sessions today due to their workshop for World Mental Health Day with Jenny Langley. It was a beautiful day - we heard and saw buzzards, robins, and wrens. The children found frogs and we also watched several large but amazing hornets flying down the 'ride' created in the woods by the tree clearance. The sun shone through the trees creating beautiful sunbeams.
Tawny Owl decided that as they had worked so hard over the last few weeks to rebuild the deadwood hedge, plant our vegetables etc. they deserved to have a true Forest School session. Those that wished to continue to help out began digging a trench so we can plant a willow screen around the tree bog. This provided a detailed study on worms, along with perfecting the technique of digging.
Wren and Dragonfly set themselves the task of redesigning and making a new ‘tippy tap’ structure, which Phoebe and Tyler helped with after lunch. The rest of the group played hard in the dens they had made in previous weeks.

Year six had the task of moving back to Stump Central today. In spite of the reduction in numbers today due to Bikeability, the children worked hard to move the lovely new sitting logs into position (and they are much larger and heavier than our original logs), sweep the cobwebs out of the tree bog, and set up the kitchen again. Some of the group closed up our temporary gap in the deadwood hedge, and added more brash to the length which remained rather low.
Whitebeam Group enjoyed popcorn cooked over the fire. Dogwood group enjoyed their first hot chocolate of the year.
They decided that as next week is their last session for them until the summer term, they would like to cook one of their favourites…damper bread. There will be savoury as well as sweet options available.
